Like a Scene From a Storybook, Hamilton Pool is Breathtaking!

Imagine swimming in a natural pool surrounded by stalactites and covered with a fern canopy. The waterfall that feeds the pool tumbles over the 50-foot drop from limestone outcroppings, offering a misting shower to anyone nearby. As you look out you can see tons of wildlife and foliage that call this place home. The refreshing water temps of this pool cool your body from the hot Texas heat as you take in all the natural beauty that surrounds you. Like a scene from a storybook, Hamilton Pool is breathtaking! You can make this storybook page your reality by visiting this preserve located in Dripping Springs, TX!

The Pool

This pool is the remnants of a collapsed grotto that once hid the gorgeous area from sight. The water here is cool and seems to stay at the same level even when the surrounding area and waterfall are down to a trickle. Part of the cave that once completely covered this pool is still there so you can rest in the shade of what is left overhead. When you head to this destination there are some things you need to know ahead of time.

From May through September, Hamilton Pool is one busy place! The area can only handle so many visitors at once, so reservations are required during this time. You can make your reservations online and pay for them ahead of time. There is a $15 entrance fee that must be paid in cash or by a local check when you reach the preserve and you are only allowed one vehicle per reservation. If you plan to bring an RV, plan on an additional $2 fee. You must show your reservation receipt upon arrival, so make sure you print it at home and bring it with you. You will not be admitted without it. Once the reservation is made it cannot be changed or refunded, so be sure of the date you want to attend.

The hike from the parking lot to the pool is very steep and rocky. Wear shoes that grip well that you don’t mind getting wet or muddy. It has been noted by many visitors that this hike may be very difficult for children, so plan accordingly when bringing little ones. Ensure you have plenty of drinking water with you, as the temperatures can get hot on this hike. No pets are allowed at the preserve, so leave them at home where they can stay cool and comfortable!

Before heading to the pool, give the office a call to find out the conditions of the bacteria in the water. The pool occasionally closes due to high levels of bacteria. But even if the bacteria level is too high to swim, the scenery and ambiance of the area is well worth the trip down to the pool.

The Trails

Hiking trails near the pool will take you on a lovely hike loaded with picturesque scenery. Along these trails you will find your way to the Pedernales River, which is what feeds the waterfall and the pool. This area is home to many endangered species of birds including the Golden-Cheeked Warbler, American White Pelican, Northern pintail, and the Zone-Tailed Hawk. Along with these endangered birds you will see many rare plants and other types of vegetation. Be sure to bring your camera for some great photos!
